This second video-cast discusses the first major component of cognition: Attention.
The key ideas are that Attention is limited in humans so the brain has automatic behaviors to reduce the demand on attention. This allows attention to focus on achieving goals that require the support of these automatic behaviors .
We discuss how automatic behaviors are made by the brain and refer to them as "chunks". Many behaviors are chunked from sport, to music, to the times table. Behaviors such as falling in love and other emotional responses can also be chunked. Sport is used to describe various aspects of chunked behaviors and their relevance to children.
The third video-cast will discuss how Inhibition, a key part of Executive function in Cognition, is used to regulate attention.
