Malcolm was a neurologist specializing in Movement Disorders and Parkinson’s Disease in particular. He was been in practice for over 40 years. His most recent clinical appointment was at the St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne and prior to that as head of Neurology at Monash Medical Centre.
Throughout that time he has had an active research interest in how movements are made, various facets of Parkinson's Disease, dopamine and Frontal Lobe function. He is currently Professor in residence at Bionics Institute in Melbourne and an Honorary Professor in the Department of Medicine University of Melbourne. He was Deputy Director of the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health at the University of Melbourne and before that a Professor in the Department of Medicine at Monash.
His research has had practical applications. A system for measuring the movement disorders in Parkinson's Disease was commercialised and he was the Founder, CSO and CEO of Global Kinetics with 7 patents prosecuted in numerous countries. The system is widely used in UK and Europe for guiding Parkinson's Disease treatment. A device for measuring ataxia is currently being commercialised.
